9 Healthy Tips For Reducing Menstrual Pain

As a woman, your body undergoes many physical, mental, physiological and emotional changes in a lifetime. While womanhood is full of many joys and triumphs, it also comes with certain physical discomforts, one of them being the menstrual cycle. Fortunately, menstrual cramps can be handled very effectively and safely by taking some easy precautions.

One of the best ways of reducing the pain associated with your monthly cycle is to make health-related changes in your daily routine. Regular exercise, proper sleep, optimum water intake and consumption of nutritious foods are found to be very useful in improving the mental, physical and spiritual health of women. Adopting a healthy life style today is like investing in a long-term health plan.┬áDuring periods you should consume lots of fluids and fresh fruits. The body looses 80 to 100 ml of blood every month during the menses so it’s important to replenish the water and mineral source.

  1. Try to take iron- and-antioxidant-rich food like oysters, shrimps, salmon, apples, turnip greens, almonds, chick beans, kidney beans, broccoli, walnuts, and cashews. Take spinach, cabbage and other green leafy vegetables for the mineral source.
  2. A half an hour walk will be helpful in relieving pain but always keep in mind that it’s best to avoid any exercise which exerts excessive pressure on your uterus. Hectic, vigorous and tiring exercises are best avoided during periods.
  3. Consume more milk and milk products for the increased calcium needs of your body.
  4. Include fibre in your diet for constipation that sometimes occurs with menstruation.
  5. Try to incorporate cinnamon, turmeric, mint, parsley, ginger and basil in your diet as these common ingredients are known to have potent analgesic and medicinal properties and are very useful in relieving menstrual pain and cramps.
  6. In case of extreme pain in your abdomen and lower back, you could use a hot water bottle, warm towel or hot pads for relief. A hot water herbal spa is also helpful in relieving your muscles and giving you soothing and much desired comfort.
  7. Try to avoid caffeine as much as possible as it has a pain-enhancing effect during the menstrual cycle. Excessive spices are also known to cause acidity or increased gastric motility. Artificial sweeteners are also best avoided.
  8. Avoid carrying heavy weights during you period.
  9. Hygiene is of utmost importance during your period. It’s always a good practice to clean your private parts from front to back as the bacteria present on the anal opening may enter the vagina, causing serious infections and complications. Use good quality sanitary napkins or tampons and change often.
